Η προσφορά του Αργεντινού συγγραφέα Χόρχε Λουίς Μπόρχες (1899 – 1986) στη λογοτεχνία του 20ού αιώνα είναι, λίγο έως πολύ, γνωστή. Ήταν από τους πρώτους συγγραφείς που κατάφερε, κυρίως μέσα από τα διηγήματα, τα δοκίμια και τις κριτικές του, να αναμείξει τη λογοτεχνία με την επιστήμη, την υψηλή με τη δημοφιλή κουλτούρα, την επιστημονική φαντασία και τη φιλοσοφία με τις αστυνομικές ιστορίες. Ο τρόπος που αξιοποίησε την έννοια του λαβύρινθου, τόσο στα θέματα ορισμένων ιστοριών του όσο και στη δομή τους, θεωρείται προάγγελος της υπερκειμενικής φύσης του διαδικτύου.

Ο Μπόρχες δεν ήταν ένας συνηθισμένος συγγραφέας. Οι συνθήκες της εποχής του και το ανήσυχο πνεύμα του ενίσχυσαν το πολύπλευρο ενδιαφέρον του για την τέχνη και τη ζωή. Για αυτό υπήρξε, εκτός από συγγραφέας, κριτικός λογοτεχνίας και κινηματογράφου, βιβλιοθηκάριος αλλά και διευθυντής ένα διάστημα της Εθνικής Βιβλιοθήκης του Μπουένος Άιρες. Το λογοτεχνικό του γούστο χαρακτηρίζεται εκλεκτικό. Και καθόλου προβλέψιμο. Το ενδιαφέρον του δεν επικεντρώθηκε στους συγγραφείς του λογοτεχνικού κανόνα, τον Γκέτε, την Τζέιν Όστεν, τον Τζέιμς Τζόις ή τον Γκαμπριέλ Γκαρσία Μάρκες. Αγάπησε με πάθος τους παραμυθάδες του 19ου αιώνα, όπως τον Έντγκάρ Άλαν Πόε και τον Τζόζεφ Ράντγιαρντ Κίπλινγκ αλλά και τον Φλομπέρ, τον Ζαν Κοκτό, τον Όσκαρ Ουάιλντ και τον Τζόναθαν Σουίφτ.

Το εύρος του λογοτεχνικού του γούστου διακρίνεται ξεκάθαρα στη λίστα με τα 75 αγαπημένα του βιβλία, την οποία κατάρτισε το 1985, λίγα χρόνια πριν από το θάνατό του, ύστερα από την προτροπή των εκδόσεων Hyspamerica της Αργεντινής.
