Statistics – interpreted in a broad sense, ranging from simple summaries of numerical data to sophisticated mathematical and computational methods of quantitative reasoning – provides a fundamental underpinning of many of the stories we tell about ourselves, both at an individual and societal level. And the historical development of Statistics is itself a remarkable story. I shall illustrate statistics as narrative and the narrative of statistics with a selective reading of the journals of the UK Royal Statistical Society, first published in 1834.
